Originally from Vincennes, Indiana, Dan Deem formed his photographic roots in
photojournalism and sports photography. While still a student at Indiana State University, Deem
chronicled campaigns and careers of U.S. presidents, and Hall of Fame athletes while earning
acclaim in his field. His images could be found in newspapers and magazines internationally,
appearing in such venues as The Saturday Evening Post, the cover of the book Hoosiers, and on
NBC’s Today Show.
Having left photojournalism in 1980 to pursue other interests, Deem took up the camera once
again in 2003, receiving inspiration from a family friend, adopting a style that is candid and a
viewpoint that is thought provoking. A collection of his work was chosen as the inaugural
exhibit in the reopening of the gallery at the historic Tutwiler Hotel in downtown Birmingham,
Alabama, where Birmingham art critic James Nelson described Deem’s work as “a lovely
collection of studies that reach beyond mere representation...as seen through a unique lens”.
Indeed, Dan’s work is well represented in private collections throughout the U.S.
Residing in Birmingham, Dan is a member of Professional Photographers of Mississippi and
Alabama.
